The 56-year-old broadcaster received the award at the annual ceremony - which is hosted by the Television and Radio Industries Club - despite quitting 'Good Morning Britain' earlier this year.

Piers posted a photo of himself and the award on Twitter, captioning the image: "Victory! ⁦ @TRICawards ⁩ [medal emoji] #TVPresenterOfTheYear (sic)"

The outspoken broadcaster - who walked away from the ITV show after criticising the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's interview with Oprah Winfrey - was joined at the bash by some of his former co-stars, including Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway, who received a TRIC Special Award.

Elsewhere, 'Coronation Street' was named as the Soap of the Year, and 'Good Morning Britain' won the gong for being the best Multi-Channel News show, overcoming competition from 'BBC Breakfast' and Sky News.

Other big-name winners included Roman Kemp, who received the Radio Personality accolade.

Roman's 'Capital Breakfast' show also won the Radio Programme gong at the ceremony.

'David Tennant Does a Podcast With…' won the award for Podcast of the Year, while 'Bridgerton' won the accolade for New Drama, seeing off competition from 'Des' and 'Gangs of London'.

Ant and Dec also enjoyed success at the event, where they won the award for TV Personality, while 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!' won the Reality gong.
