There’s nothing secret about the way in which Ricky Whittle’s time on The 100 came to an end, with the actor accusing the series’ showrunner Jason Rothenberg of bullying. Despite the darkness of the situation, Whittle says he’s learned from it and moved on.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he explained: “We all know how I left The 100 with Jason Rothenberg. But without the darkness, I wouldn’t really appreciate the light. I’m a very happy and positive person, which is why I hated that negative situation, because it wasn’t my own doing. I pulled myself out of a negative situation and removed myself from a negative person.”

He then went on to praise the showrunners he’s currently working with on American Gods; Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, adding: “I’ve replaced this negativity with two of the most incredible showrunners I’ve ever had the honour of meeting, both professionally and personally.

“Together you have two incredible writing stars who have created this monster of a project, and they’re the nicest people you’ll ever meet. It’s not often you get that package in the same person, but you do in Bryan and Michael.”

Whittle returns to the small screen at the end of the month and the beginning of May with American Gods in the lead role of Shadow Moon; a recently released ex-convict who’s employed by a mysterious man known only as Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane).

Based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, the author also serves as an executive producer on the series, which is already gaining critical acclaim in early reviews.

American Gods premieres in the US on Starz on April 30 and begins in the UK on May 1 on Amazon Prime Video.
