Speaking at the Rockerfeller Centre in New York, House of Cards actor Robin Wright described exactly how she secured equal pay for the series to that which was being paid to her co-star Kevin Spacey.

She explained: "It was the perfect paradigm. There are very few films or TV shows where the male, the patriarch, and the matriarch are equal. And they are in House of Cards.

"I was like: 'I want to be paid the same as Kevin'.

"I was looking at the statistics and Claire Underwood's character was more popular than [Frank's] for a period of time. So I capitalised on it.

"I was like: 'You'd better pay me or I'm going to go public.' And they did."

Not only appearing in all episodes to-date of the series, Wright has directed several episodes and is listed with Spacey as an executive director of the fifth season.

House of Cards seasons 1-4 are available now on Netflix, with season 5 airing in 2017.
