The gentle giant café owner, played by David Neilson, 75, is set for the ordeal after spending weeks on the ITV soap as Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain’s prime suspect since he foolishly deep cleaned Lauren’s flat after she mysteriously disappeared.

David said about how the plot will echo his character’s early days on the show in the 1990s when Corrie residents feared Roy was “creepy”: “Roy is innocent in every respect – he is innocent of the crime – but he is also an innocent soul.

“He never thought for one minute it would come to this, he truly felt that if he simply answered everything honestly it would all be OK and he was naïve to assume that being innocent meant that he would be seen to be innocent.

“What I like about this storyline is the way it has gone back 29 years to 1995 when Roy first arrived.

“It is reminiscent of that early Roy Cropper when people were suspicious of his behaviour and thought he was creepy.

“And all this history will be used against him, things that have happened in the past like abducting their foster child.

“All that makes this storyline interesting to play and to watch it unfold.”

‘Coronation Street’ bosses said Friday’s (12.04.24) episode of the series will see Roy charged with her murder.

The show has already Roy become a terrified recluse after Internet trolls started attacking him in the wake of Lauren’s disappearance.

This week’s shows will also see a woman pretending to be the teen’s mum visiting Roy’s café before she ends up tussling with him before falling and banging her head.

A press release from ‘Corrie’ said Friday’s episode is to feature a police room interrogation showdown between DS Swain and Roy.

Roy and his solicitor Dee Dee then end up shocked when they are told he is being charged with Lauren’s murder and will be held in police custody.

The show will see Roy sat alone and terrified in a dark cell ahead of his pending court hearing.

‘Corrie’ bosses added about how the plot will develop: “Can Roy’s devastated friends and family get to the bottom of what has happened to Lauren and free their friend from jail?

“With no information on Lauren’s whereabouts and no other real suspects for the crime, has Roy paid the ultimate price for his honest and trusting nature?”
