Ruth Jones has dismissed claims that a new Gavin and Stacey Christmas special is in the works

The 57-year-old actress, who plays Nessa in the beloved British comedy, wrote the show with James Corden from 2007 to 2010, as well as its festive episode five years ago. Recently, it was rumoured that another Christmas one-off was in development, with Netflix attempting to outbid the BBC for the episode, but Ruth has now dismissed the claims as nothing but hearsay.

During an appearance on RTE Radio 1, she said: “It’s sadly a rumour... All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it, we would.

“Apparently there’s a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix and I love it because it says ‘a source says’, who is this source?”

Ruth theorised that the rumours came to be after she was pictured having lunch with James in the U.S. after he had finished his stint as the presenter on the 'Late Late Show'.

She explained: “Then the next thing is ‘Oh my god they must be writing more 'Gavin and Stacey’, which is lovely.

“It’s lovely that people are so desperate for it because imagine if it was the opposite and were like ‘Oh, god, you’re not bringing that back again’.”

On Tuesday (13.02.24) it was reported that the cast would reunite for another festive special, and that Mathew Horne (Gavin) Joanna Page (Stacey) Alison Steadman (Pam) and Larry Lamb (Mick) have all agreed to return.

A source told The Sun: “Ruth and James have always maintained they will bring the show back only if they are 100 per cent happy with the script — and they are almost there.

“They rang individual members of the cast to float the idea of a one-off special, and every single person was excited and on board.

“To be clear, no agents were called, and no one bar James and Ruth has seen the script — but there’s a lot of goodwill here."
