Spain is to be represented by X Factor contender Ruth Lorenzo this year in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The busty brunette - who was born in the Spanish town of Murcia - has been chosen to compete on behalf of her native country at the ceremony on May 10, after beating four other entrants during the national finals on Saturday February 22.

Ruth, 31, will be performing 'Dancing in the Rain', a ballad she penned herself, and is set to sing both in English and Spanish.

Spain automatically qualifies for the final along with France, Germany, Italy and the UK, as one of the 'big five' countries who make significant financial contributions to the contest.

If Ruth wins it will be a big feat for Spain, who hasn't won the contest since 1969.

Ruth wowed fans on the British version of 'The X Factor' in 2008, in which she competed alongside winner Alexandra Burke, runners-up JLS and Diana Vickers. Ruth, who was mentored by Dannii Minogue, came fifth in the competition.

Meanwhile, fellow 'X Factor' alumni Eoghan Quigg - who was mentored by Simon Cowell on the ITV talent show - is hoping to represent Ireland at Eurovision in three months' time.

Denmark were the victors of Eurovision last year with Emmelie de Forest's song 'Only Teardrops'.

Bonnie Tyler represented the UK but her entry, 'Believe In Me, failed to impress and landed in 19th place.
