The two actors - who play respective love rivals Adam Barlow and Gary Windass - have become close off screen, and it has helped clear up Sam's mind when it comes to his life as a famous soap star.

Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, he said: "It's all about mindset. I've started hanging out with Mikey off screen and he deals with it really well. He's so cool with everyone, whereas I'm more temperamental.

"Now I've accepted its a part of the job and I'm just going to have to cope with it. I'll never have a night out without someone asking for a selfie, and now I realise that's no big deal.

"I'm really keen to stay now - I feel as if I've really got my teeth into it. I've been speaking to the bosses about potentially staying beyond my contract this year."

Sam, 33, almost quit the cobbles earlier this year after taking a two month break, and he admitted he was struggling with life in the public eye.

He added: "I was in a strange headspace before my break, because this job overtakes you life. You can't just leave it at the door on a Friday night.

"I wasn't enjoying that aspect of it, so I needed some thinking time to decide if I wanted to do that long term."

His comments come after reports Sam - who has played Adam on and off for the last 15 years - was in talks for a new big-money contract to keep him on the cobbles after his sabbatical.

An insider said: "Sam spent time with his friends and family, which gave him time to realise how much he was enjoying being in 'Corrie', and since coming back he's been a different man.

"He is really enjoying being given a more prominent role on the show, and is keen to sign on for another 12 months - which has been music to [boss] Iain MacLeod's ears as he thinks Sam is brilliant.

"It sounds like it's just a matter of dotting the Is and crossing the Ts."
