The 64-year-old music mogul and his fellow judges - including Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Bruno Tonioli - enjoyed a newfound sense of freedom for this year's auditions, and have been gleefully pressing the golden buzzer multiple times despite the fact they're each only meant to do so once per series on the ITV talent show.

As quoted by the Daily Star newspaper, Simon said: "I love that there aren't any rules on the show any more.

"It is kind of like being back at school, because the teachers keep coming in saying, 'You know, can we try and keep the golden buzzers down?'

"And they know we've got absolutely no intention whatsoever of doing that."

And while the producers have to at least attempt to keep the judge's in line, Simon thinks they are "secretly" enjoying the chaos.

He added: "I think they secretly love when it happens. But they have to try and keep us in check. But I don't think it matters."

Amanda, 53, admitted this year's auditions were "slightly chaotic" and laid the blame on Simon himself.

And Alesha said: "You have to embrace spontaneity and embrace what people are feeling."

Earlier this year, Simon's 10-year-old son Eric and Amanda's 12-year-old daughter Hollie hit the buzzer for Japanese act Haribo during auditions in Salford.

Simon said at the time: "That was my son and Amanda’s daughter, egged on by the audience.

"It’s like father, like son and like mother, like daughter. More rules have been broken this year than any other year.

"This has never happened before - I might get fired."

Simon previously suggested the one-buzzer rule may have to be scrapped.

He told the crowd at auditions: "I’m very excited, we don’t know who is going to come on and we’ll meet people together.

"This year there’s just one rule: be as naughty as you want."
