The ITV show went on hiatus after the 2018 season and was replaced by 'The X Factor: Celebrity' and 'The X Factor: The Band' in 2019 but Simon, 61, is planning to come back with a bang next year.

A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Simon wants to keep everyone on his sets safe and let 2021 play out. But he feels, after a much-needed break, 'X Factor' 2022 will be good to go, with some changes."

Simon also has plans for other TV shows, which he is hoping to bring to a streaming platform.

The insider added: "He’s asked his team to examine what TV formats could be ready by next year and feels channels and streaming platforms are in need of new ideas and there are opportunities to shape the future of TV."

Meanwhile, it was previously revealed that ITV fully supported Simon's plans for the 'X Factor' to take a break.

An insider said: "Simon wants to really think through the show and how to reinvigorate it for the future.

"Although ‘The X Factor’ is contracted for one more series, ITV totally understand the rationale behind the idea of resting it and want to give Simon and the team the time to do what they feel is right."
