The 41-year-old actor - who plays Steve McDonald in the soap - went on a five-month hiatus in September, following an intense storyline about his character suffering from depression.

And the break lasted longer when his wife Emma Gleave - who already have sons Alfie, eight, and six-year-old Harry together - gave birth to their third child Henry in December.

However, Simon has confirmed he'll be back on the cobbles next week and said he's feeling anxious like it is his "first day at school".

Asked when he'll return to the soap, he told Manchester's Key 103 radio station: "Monday, first day. Nervous! Even when we get two weeks off at Christmas, everyone comes back and it's like the first day at school. You're like, 'I've forgotten how to work'."

Simon - who has played the role of Steve since 1989 - was originally signed off sick for three months by producers because the heavy story had a massive "impact" on him.

A source said at the time: "He put everything into [the storyline]. It had a big impact on him because it helped to raise awareness of a condition which affects thousands of people.

"He's decided to take a bit of time out and has the support of everyone on the show."

Meanwhile, viewers of the programme currently believe Steve is holidaying in Spain with his twin brother Andy in the plot, and he's joked that he had to get a fake tan for his return.

He quipped: "I look like someone from Essex!"
