The Blue singer will join the 'River City' as army veteran Andy in November when his alter ego rocks up in Shieldinch as a close friend of the suburb's newcomers The Roth family.

He said of his new role: "It's an amazing feeling getting a role on 'River City'. Getting into acting and being taken seriously is something that I've always wanted to do.

"Going from being a TV extra into being in a boy band, it's an absolute dream come true.

"'River City' is full of feisty characters and I can't wait to get my teeth into Andy's storylines.

"This is the first time I've acted in Scotland but I've toured here loads of times with Blue ... and I supported Wet Wet Wet. My experience has always been, the further north you go, the louder the fans get and that's the vibe I always get in Scotland. People recognise you in the street and are always welcoming. I can't wait to get started on 'River City'."

Despite his excitement, this isn't the first time the 38-year-old hunk has sunk his teeth into acting as he's also appeared in 2005's 'The Truth About Love', which saw Jennifer Love Hewitt in the lead, and the crime thriller 'Rollin' with the Nines'.

Meanwhile, Simon isn't the first member of the popular 90s boy band to break the small screen, as Duncan James has just landed the role of Ryan Knight in 'Hollyoaks'.

However, his contract was thrown into jeopardy a few months ago when he was forced to undergone emergency surgery on his spine just a week before he was meant to start shooting his debut scenes for the Channel 4 show.
