DC fans can now celebrate in the fact that the Supergirl television series has been given a premiere date of October 26, 2015.

The news was revealed by Melissa Benoist herself, who stars as the title character AKA Kara Zor-El, the cousin to Superman and a Kryptonian who has spent her years on Earth passing off as your average young adult female. Deciding now is the time to unleash her powers on the world and help defend innocents against a variety of threats, Supergirl has a lot to learn if she's to live up to the legacy cast down by her cousin.

Despite the pilot already leaking online, the official premiere of the first episode will come to CBS on Oct 26 at 8.30pm EST, following a special air time for a new episode of The Big Bang Theory. This could mean huge ratings for the premiere and give the series the kickstart it needs to truly get off the ground. Thereafter, episodes of Supergirl will air at 8pm on Mondays starting in November.

With Benoist leading the cast, viewers will also be able to enjoy Calista Flockhart of Ally McBeal fame as Cat Grant - a powerful CEO and Kara's boss, as well as Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyle Leigh as Alexandra 'Alex' Danvers, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Jeremy Jordan as Winslow 'Winn' Schott.

Reactions so far have been very varied, with some enjoying the upbeat and sometimes comedic take on the superhero genre and others claiming it's simply an attempt to silence the demand for a female-led superhero series.

Created and produced by Arrow and The Flash's Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti alongside Ali Adler, there's a huge chance that this is going to be a major success if the collective body of work that comes from that trio before this is anything to go by.

Poised to get off to a great start, there's already a good buzz surrounding Supergirl - now we just need to know when and where it'll be airing in the UK.
