The 42-year-old actress stars in the new BBC drama - which tells the story of a police detective who investigates a suspicious death aboard a submarine - and she's described it as a "boys-y" thriller, "but with two female leads".

Suranne - who stars alongside 'Game of Thrones' actress Rose Leslie - told the Radio Times: "It’s a full show, as in it’s a boys-y kind of thriller, but with two female leads that are part of it - it has a romantic story. And it has that element of the thrills that come through to the last episode, [which] are amazing. And quite shocking.

"So it’s got it. It’s a really bold task."

Tom Edge, the show's creator, explained that he deliberately chose a female detective as his lead character, as he wanted to underline her "outsider" status.

Tom explained: "In this show, we wanted a character who is made to feel like an outsider, and the truth of these submarines is that it’s often half a dozen women and a lot of men, and they’re traditionally very male worlds as well.

"So, for a female detective to step into that space, there is a novelty, even with the female officers."

Meanwhile, Suranne recently described her role in 'Vigil' as the most bruising challenge of her career.

The actress said: "When I first read the script, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this sounds amazing - I get to do all these stunts!’

"But I forgot how old I was. I thought I was 23 when I was reading it, and that’s not true any more. So I had to do a lot of working out just to build up my strength in order to do those scenes.

"I got whiplash, I put my back out a couple of times and I was covered in bruises. Every time I went home, my husband was like, ‘What the hell have they done to you now?’

"But it was fun to do and I watch the finished series and go, ‘Oh, Amy’s great!’ But I was hobbling home and having Epsom salt baths during filming."
