Under the Banner of Heaven is an upcoming Disney+ series that will release under the Star banner, meaning it is for more mature viewers. The show stars The Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield in the lead role as Detective Jeb Pyre.

The series tells the true story of a woman by the name of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones, Fresh) who was, along with her young daughter, murdered in 1984 in Utah. Under the Banner of Heaven is based on the book by Jon Krakauer.

As Detective Pyre digs deeper into the events that occurred within the Lafferty family, he reveals some buried truths about where the LDS (Latter-Day Saints) religion came from, and the harrowing results that can come from unrelenting faith.

What Pyre, a devour Mormon, uncovers during his investigation may lead him to question his own faith, lest it shatter around him.

Under the Banner of Heaven will consist of seven limited episodes, and also stars Sam Worthington (Avatar), Denise Gough (Colette), Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier), Billy Howle (Dunkirk), Gil Birmingham (Pieces of Her), Adelaide Clemens (Parade’s End), Rory Culkin (Scream 4), Seth Numrich (Paper Tiger), with Chloe Pirrie (TV’s The Queen’s Gambit) and Sandra Seacat (The Time Being).

The trailer for the show highlights Garfield in this thrilling new role; after seeing him as Spider-Man, it is brilliant to witness him taking on such a different character, and seemingly nailing it.

We also see Edgar-Jones in her role as Branda Lafferty, the mother who was killed along with her 15-month-old baby. Not much is revealed in the trailer with regard to her role, which may be best as the impact of her playing a character who is dead in the main timeline will be intriguing to see.

The series teases faith as well as the questioning of it, murder, loss of trust within a loving community, and many more bad omens.

Under the Banner of Heaven will arrive on Disney+ (under the Star banner) on July 27th, 2022.
