Brenda Blethyn, 77, will be back as DCI Vera Stanhope in the ITV crime drama set in the North East.

Production is scheduled for this spring, with a release date yet to be confirmed.

The news came as the 13th series wrapped on Sunday (21.01.24).

Vera and DI Joe Ashworth, who she doesn't always see eye to eye with, investigated the death of a chip shop owner who was discovered in his store's freezer.

The plot read: "A seemingly successful entrepreneur and dedicated family man, Vera uncovers secrets, lies and some unforgivable behaviour as she tries to unwrap the case.

"Once the investigation begins, it soon becomes apparent that our enigmatic entrepreneur has left behind debts, broken promises, ruined lives and seriously interfered in family business that was not his own. Who is responsible for this unsavoury chip shop assault and battery?"

No other cast members have been confirmed as of yet, however, David Leon (Joe), 43, admitted last year he would be keen to reprise his role.

He told RadioTimes.com: "I'd certainly be very open to [returning].

"We haven't had any conversations about that as things stand, but it's something I'm very proud of and I'd certainly be open-minded to that."
