Viola Davis was one of the biggest winners at this year's Emmys, as she became the first ever black female winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, for her fantastic portrayal of Annalise Keating in ABC series How to Get Away with Murder.
Following the win, Davis took to the stage to give an emotional acceptance speech in which she included a quote by 19th century icon Harriet Tubman.
"'In my mind I see a line, and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can't seem to get there no how. I can't seem to get over that line.'
"That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s, and let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.
"So, here's to all the writers, the awesome people that are Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes. People who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.
"And to the Taraji P Hensons and Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goodes, to Gabrielle Union. Thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you for the Television Academy. Thank you."
Scandal actress Kerry Washington was openly emotional during Davis' speech, with Taraji P Henson standing throughout the acceptance.
Two other wins for black actresses came after Davis', with Uzo Aduba taking home Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in Orange is the New Black, whilst Regina King's role in American Crime saw her take the gong for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series.
Game of Thrones also made history, breaking the Emmy record for most wins with a grand total of 12 when all was said and done.
The show picked up a bunch of creative awards on the night, and managed to finally walk away with the Best Drama Series prize at the ceremony.
