The 50-year-old bodybuilder - who was known as Ace on the hit TV show - had an 18-month relationship with Katie in the 90s, but he struggled to deal with life in the public eye.

He confessed: "We were both equally to blame for the breakdown of our relationship."

Warren and Katie struggled to maintain their romance as they were both busy with their careers at the time.

He told The Sun newspaper: "We were very similar people, we came from working-class backgrounds and we got on very well, but the pressures of fame cursed the relationship in a lot of ways."

Warren and Katie actually separated on good terms. And the TV star now acknowledges that he was too busy seeking fame and success to make their romance work.

He said: "My idol was Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s a man just conquering the world with big muscles.

"I thought that’s what I would do - I’d go to Hollywood and become a movie star. Another Gladiator, Trojan - Mark Griffin - had done that. He got to Hollywood and was appearing in movies with the likes of Jean Claude Van Damme."

'Gladiators' was axed in 2000 and Warren subsequently turned to alcohol and cigarettes.

He recalled: "I was an athlete and sportsman on a TV show that required me to be fit, but I started to pick up some habits that I never thought I would ever, like smoking and drinking alcohol, and quite a lot of it."

Warren felt that his "destructive choices" were "slowing killing" him at one point in time. However, he's now got his life back on track, and he hopes that Katie can follow suit, having gone through some high-profile personal problems in recent years.

He said: "I pray for her because in that lifestyle of hers it’s very difficult to keep on the straight and narrow, and it’s very difficult to trust people. I pray that her family can stay together and I pray that she can settle down and find peace and happiness."
