Britain’s most famous sports broadcasters have led a flood of tributes to ‘World of Sport’ presenter Dickie Davies after he died aged 94

Dickie was best known for his time presenting the smash ITV sports show for 17 years up until it ended in 1985, and his former colleague Jim Rosenthal confirmed he had passed away on Sunday (19.02.23) night.

Jim, 75, tweeted: “With huge sadness we announce Dickie Davies passed away this morning.

“So proud of his 20 years of ‘World of Sport’, 3 Olympic Games and a brilliant career on the telly. He is survived by a loving wife, two adoring sons, four grandkids and two beloved dogs.|

Dickie suffered a stroke in 1995 but fought back and went on to front ‘Dickie Davies' Sporting Heroes’.

He was renowned for his huge range, covering sports including boxing, darts and snooker, as well as the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Born in Cheshire, Dickie completed National Service with the RAF before he served on board the RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth ships as a purser.

After starting his broadcasting career with Southern Television, he was urged by ITV colleague Jimmy Hill to go by Dickie Davies rather than his name Richard Davies.

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, 65, paid tribute to Dickie on Twitter, saying: “Dickie Davies. A legend. It’s the end of that era. A kind man and brilliant broadcaster. RIP Dickie.”

Sports broadcaster Mark Pougatch, 55, added on Twitter: “Ach, Dickie Davies. The rest of us walk in the footsteps of giants. RIP.”

Gabby Logan, 49, joined the tributes tweeting: “Rest in peace Dickie Davies, one of the very best.”

Sports presenter Simon Thomas, 49, tweeted: “Rest in peace Dickie Davies. Absolute giant of sports broadcasting,” while football commentator Nigel Adderley added: “Dickie Davies was a true great. To do that programme so well for so long showed how good he was.”
