The celebrities maths skills let them down as they tried to win a cake – and J and Cerys had a row about twenty per cent of sixty.

The celebrities were given a Perspex chest with a chocolate cake inside it, but beneath the chocolate cake were dozens of cockroaches.

The celebrities had just seven minutes to work out the combinations for the five padlocks that unlocked the cake before it would be dropped into the cockroaches.

Before the test started Gemma became panicky and told the campmates: “I’m really sorry but I had extra tuition in maths. I can’t do maths, I can’t do it.”

Cerys reassured her and said: “Just do your best, if we don’t get it, don’t worry.”

First up was Biggins and Gemma read his sum out. It was: 10x12 -12 +90 and Biggins correctly said that the answer was 198 and unlocked his padlock.

Janice said: “I’m bad at math you guys, really bad at math.”

Next up was Gemma who got: 6x7 +5 -20. She managed to multiply six by seven and add five, which made 47, but she couldn’t get the correct figure when she tried to takeaway 20.

She started to get stressed and panicky as the contestants heard the clock chiming in the background. J tried to help Gemma by giving her a clue, but she got confused and rushed to the chest thinking the answer was 24.

She realised she was wrong and said: “I’m so sorry you guys.” She began to panic even more and the others suggested she run through the list of numbers and they would stop her when she got to the right number. Eventually she got to 27 and unlocked the second padlock.

Next it was Janice’s turn to work out 20% of 60. Straight away she said she couldn’t do it and Biggins suggested she try to start with 10% and then double it. But Janice thought 10% was ten.

She then started chanting: “40, 30, 10, 5.” And saying any number that popped into her head. She started to count down and when she eventually reached six she realised she was right. Cerys then told her to double it and she thought the answer was 66.

Cerys said: “If 10% is six, what’s 20%?”

Janice: “16? 22, it’s 22.” But bewildered Cerys just looked at Janice and slowly shook her head.

J then whispered to Janice that the answer is 24 and she ran to the chest to put the code in the padlock. But as she fiddled with the padlock the time ran out and the cake dropped into the cockroaches.

Afterwards J said to Janice: “Did you put 024 in the padlock?”

Janice said: “I did and it wouldn’t open.”

J said: “Did you do 024?”

Janice: "Yes and it wouldn’t open.”

Cerys said: “It’s 012 isn’t it?” But J insisted: “No, it’s 20%.”

Cerys said: “What’s 10% of 60 then? It’s six.”

J said: “No, 12.” He then studied the lock and said: ‘It’s because she didn’t get it on the red line.”

Cerys walked away muttering: “Well I can’t do percentages then.”

Biggins said: “So what is 10% of 60?”

Cerys said: “Twelve he said. I thought it was six.”

Janice said: "I thought it was six, it is six.”

Biggins agreed: “Ten per cent of 60 is six.”

J said: “Ten per cent of what?”

Biggins said: “Of sixty is six.’

J said: “But you want 20%.”

Biggins said: “Yeah, then you double it. If 10% is six, 20% is 12.”

But J still wasn’t having it and said: “What was the sum?”

Biggins explained it and J said: “Well a fifth of 60 is 12.”

Cerys said: “Yes, that’s what the answer is. You don’t have to double it.”

Janice summed up the game and said: “It’s a really smart game and we f*cked up.”
