Millions of Coronation Street viewers were left stunned last night (August 18) when it was revealed that Pat Phelan had been keeping Andy Carver hostage for seven months, after many had come to the conclusion that he’d murdered the youngster with a laptop in scenes that aired at the beginning of this year.

Andy found evidence that would expose the evil builder in January, but when he confronted Phelan, he found himself hit over the head and wrapped up in a rug. What we didn’t know until now however was that Phelan has been living a double life, keeping Andy prisoner, but feeding him so he wouldn’t die in the basement of an abandoned house.

Clues have been littered throughout episodes of Corrie, with Phelan gaining a black eye and arriving home late from work on more than one occasion. With Andy his captor, he thinks he can live his double life peacefully, but Andy has other ideas.

Deciding he’s had enough, Andy will attempt to escape his prison in Monday night’s (August 21) double episode, lying in wait for Phelan with a rope and pouncing on him when he does arrive. Whether or not he’ll be successful in his escape attempts remains to be seen.

Speaking about his new look, actor Oliver Farnworth who plays Andy explained: “I knew that was coming (the beard) so I spent about three months growing my beard and my hair and I grew my nails a bit longer. When I get on set they put an olive oil spray in my hair so it is really lank and greasy, then they put dirt all over me, stuff under my fingernails. It sounds like dressing but that and outing on filthy clothes really helps get you into the mind-set of the character.”

You can check out the new episodes of Coronation Street, Monday night on ITV.
