Hetti Bywater as Lucy Beale

Hetti Bywater as Lucy Beale

The storyline we've all been teased for weeks before has finally kicked off, as Lucy Beale starred in her final scenes in last night's EastEnders, murdered by someone on Albert Square.

Interacting with pretty much the entire roster of show characters in the past fortnight or so, there's quite a few people in the frame, but we've whittled down the list to just five, one of which we believe will be ousted as Lucy's killer in 2015.

SUSPECT NUMBER 1 - MAX BRANNING

He's the most obvious choice, after receiving strange emails and enjoying a love affair with Lucy before she decided she was going to try her luck with the new Carter boy Lee, instead. Could his jealousy have pushed him over the brink, and would it benefit him to simply get rid of Lucy so that his secret never gets out?

SUSPECT NUMBER 2 - LAUREN BRANNING

Could she know what Lucy and her father have been getting up to? The last time Max had an affair it ripped her family apart and sent her over the edge, and so she could be trying to protect that from happening all over again. Then there's the feelings she still harbours for Jake, and the fact she thinks something is going on between him and her business partner.

SUSPECT NUMBER 3 - JAKE STONE

There is the very real possibility that Lucy is playing three guys at the same time, and she could be connected to Jake as much as Lee and Max. With the announcement that Jamie Lomas will be leaving the Square, it could make sense to tie it in to his storyline, but would this be a cop-out for fans who want to try and solve the mystery themselves, and may find it impossible without Jake in Walford?

SUSPECT NUMBER 4 - IAN BEALE

He's rightfully devestated when the police deliver the news of Lucy's death, but could that be simply because he killed his daughter himself? He found out exactly what Lucy was hiding on the night of her murder - could it push him to do the unthinkable?

SUSPECT NUMBER 5 - PETER BEALE

Peter overheard last night that his father Ian is most proud of Lucy out of all of his children - could the sibling rivalry go to a whole new level for Peter?

Two Brannings, two Beales and a Stone. Of course, we could be completely off and the murderer could be somebody else. Perhaps Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy) will make a return after his swift exit to take revenge on Lucy after she embarrassed him, or Billy could let his emotions get the better of him after being rejected for the business.

The list is endless, but one thing is for sure. This is a storyline that will keep the nation gripped throughout. Hopefully.
