The 65-year-old actress is desperate to reprise her role as Maureen Naylor - which she portrayed from 1993 until 1997 and then again briefly in 2006 - in the ITV soap and get caught up in a love triangle involving Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) and his new lover Nessa Warner (Sadie Shimmi).

She said: "I loved Maureen. I never thought she finished her story. Now if she went back I'd put her with Bill Roache. It would give him some comedy to do. If ever Maureen came back that would be a really good match."

However, a return to the Cobbles could be a little way off as Sherrie currently has her hands tied up with 'Benidorm'.

And it doesn't seem like the blonde beauty - who plays bolshie hotel manager Joyce Temple-Savage in the comedy - is keen to part ways with the sitcom just yet.

She explained to The Sun newspaper: "This is the pinnacle, this is me doing drama and comedy with the best writer there is in this business now, Derren Litten. This is the best character anyone could have written for me."

Meanwhile, the forthcoming series will also see the return of Dame Joan Collins as she reprises her role as superbitch Crystal Hennessy-Vass, and Sherrie is hoping a vicious pool scrap will brew between the two.

She said: "I'd love a fight in a pool, Joan and me. The only person Joyce is intimidated by is Joan Collins and she's back to cause me some kind of trouble. I love trouble. I don't think she'd go for that. She'd push me in but she'd never go in the pool ... and quite right too."
