James Arthur won last year's show

As The X Factor comes to a close tonight for another year, the hard work will truly begin for our victor when they have to pave their way and carve themselves a career in the tough music industry.

It's not been the easiest thing to do for our winners of series past, with only a handful - if that - of the winners still maintaining any sort of relevance in the world of pop and chart music today.

Steve Brookstein went straight to number one with his debut album, but after crossing the big boss Simon Cowell, drowned in the hopes of creating a successful, life-long career.

Eye-candy Shayne Ward fared a little better, and went on to release albums that did well commercially. He was snapped up by the West End, appearing in musicals including 'We Will Rock You', and also appeared on ITV's 'Dancing on Ice'. Unfortunately, he won't be back for the all-star series in 2014.

Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis was the first female winner, and of course went on to see rip-roaring success, not only in the UK but across the pond in the United States, breaking all sorts of records and captivating a global audience with her tremendous vocals. Her debut single outsold the rest of the UK top 40 combined.

Leon Jackson came next, and, well... let's just say he's not the most memorable of characters. He's not a bad singer, and could quite easily come back into the industry with the right management and technique, but he has a lot to prove after so long out of the spotlight.

Alexandra Burke

When we heard Alexandra Burke duet with Beyonce on the show's live final, we voted in our thousands to ensure she would be crowned victorious, but support has fizzled out over the years and left her record-label hopping.

Becoming the first X Factor winner not to go straight to number one for the Christmas number one title holder, Rage Against The Machine fans fought against Simon Cowell. He's moved on to the world of classical music, and has seen some good success.

Matt Cardle

Matt Cardle's very hit and miss, but his latest album 'Porcelain' certainly isn't one to miss. His spats with last year's winner James Arthur are also very entertaining to all.

Tulisa ensured the first group to ever take the crown were her 'Little Muffins' Little Mix - formerly known as Rhythmix - and they're taking the world by storm with their catchy pop tunes and terrific vocals.

Little Mix

Ninth winner James Arthur has been under fire lately for some of his ignorant comments, but his talent is absolutely undeniable, and Nicole Scherzinger couldn't be prouder.

But who'll become winner number ten, and will their career hit the heights of some of the winners before them? Only time will tell. Catch The X Factor Finale Results Show tonight on ITV at 7.30pm.
