HBO are unleashing a tirade of promotion for their second season of True Detective, with a pair of new trailers now being released to hype the return of Nic Pizzolato's anthology series.

Kicking things off in traditional style with a murder, this season will see the main roster doubled with four characters taking centre stage: Colin Farrell as a self-loathing compromised detective, Rachel McAdams as a fellow frustrated detective who wants to always do the right thing, a motorcycle cop with past trauma and a war veteran's past played by Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn as a criminal kingpin.

The official synopsis for the new season reads:

"A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life's work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own. Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars."

Without really revealing too much about what viewers should expect from the new episodes, the trailers do well in maintaining fan interest.

Justin Lin steps into the director's role for the first two episodes of the eight-episode season, with the first installment coming to screens later this month.

Premiering in America on June 21 on HBO, True Detective season 2 will be simulcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
