I was so excited to hear that Quorn had released a vegan version of their 'chicken' pieces as I was looking for a vegan, high protein, low calorie food that was also syn free on Slimming World. (I know, I don't ask much!) I bought some when we went for our weekly shop so I could make my beloved chicken tikka curry just like I used to- minus the meat.

Quorn Meat Free Vegan Pieces

I fried the onions and then added the Quorn pieces with the spices to let them soak in before adding the tomatoes and non-dairy cream. I am very sad to say that despite the abundance of spices and different flavours, they didn't alter the taste of the pieces and they remained a bland addition to my curry. I read online that Quorn soaks up any flavourings well, however I didn't find that to be the case with this product.

The packaging instructs you to cook the pieces in a sauce for around 20 minutes- but the longer it cooks for, the stringier it gets, making it less like meat the longer it simmers for.

The whole bag does contain 280g, so only about 300 calories for the entire thing and it does boast a vegan friendly 16g of protein per 100 g too, which are still huge plus points for vegans who need more protein and vegans who are calorie counting.

It was on offer when it first came out and still regularly is at the supermarket so it might be worth making your own mind up when they are a little cheaper.

Overall, I was disappointed with the result and have gone back to making myself chickpea curry again. Maybe it's the way I cooked them, maybe Quorn vegan pieces are not the best accompaniment to a curry, I'm not sure- whatever the reason I would be willing to try them again if someone has a recipe where it's worked particularly well. I much prefer the Quorn Meat Free Hot and Spicy Burgers from the new vegan range.
