This is not the reality for many turtles

They found that thousands of turtles we caged along with the remains of other turtles. They were confined to overcrowded enclosures with stagnant dirty water that smelt like a 'morning toilet' according to one investigator.

One worker was told to put 6,000 yellow-bellied turtles into one enclosure. The creatures had to push and fight others of their kind to reach the surface just to get some air.

Tortoises were held in troughs and not fed enough. They were then left in packing cases and pillowcases for days or weeks on end so many died by the time they reached their destination.

Approximately 12,000 turtles were left in boxes for weeks without food, water and space or ventilation.

In one day alone 657 were declared dead.

About 10,000 turtles were found in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions upon the day of seizure.
