An investigation committee into the US Capitol riot recommends criminal charges against Donald Trump

The committee investigating the riot on January 6 last year claims that the former president should be charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstructing an official proceeding (the certification of Joe Biden's election victory), conspiracy to make a false statement and inciting or assisting an insurrection.

The recommendation is largely symbolic as the US Justice Department is responsible for deciding whether or not Trump will be prosecuted.

The committee chair, Democrat Bernie Thompson, said: "We have every confidence that the work of this committee will help provide the road map to justice."

A number of recommendations are made in the final report with Trump accused of engaging in a "multi-part conspiracy" to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

Thompson said: "We will also show that evidence we've gathered points to further action beyond the power of this committee or the congress to help ensure accountability in the law.

"Accountability that can only be found in the criminal justice system."

Trump's presidential campaign released a statement accusing the committee of "holding show trials by Never Trump partisans who are a stain on this country's history".

The statement added: "This Kangaroo court has been nothing more than a vanity project that insults Americans' intelligence and makes a mockery of our democracy."
