Donald Trump's legal woes should rule him out of the 2024 election, an expert claims

The former president has a number of criminal and civil cases against him and appeared in a New York court this week as part of a civil case accusing him of fraud but continues to lead the race for the Republican nomination for next year's election.

Professor Grant Reeher believes that the issues would be a "career execution" for any conventional politician and is shocked that Trump still has so much support.

Professor Reeher, director of the Campbell Public Affairs Institute, told The Mirror: "I always say this, if this were normal politics and a normal guy, I would say that these things would be disqualifying. For any kind of presidential candidate.

"But obviously, neither of those two ifs are true here. I would have thought that the drip drip drip of these criminal and now civil legal problems would have eroded a lot of his support by now.

"And one would have thought that what we learned about his behaviour before, during and after January 6, and after the November election would have really diminished some of the support even of his deepest supporters."

The legal woes have not damaged Trump's standing amongst Republicans but Professor Reeher believes it will count against him in the 2024 presidential election.

The expert - a professor of political science at Syracuse University - said: "If he makes it to the general election, if he is the Republican nominee, then I think this stuff is going to hurt him.

"He has a narrow but very deep vein of support among Republicans, that's not shifting. And we're seeing clearly, they are sticking by this guy."
