Donald Trump remains defiant after his arrest in Georgia

The former US president was booked into Fulton County Jail in Atlanta on Thursday (24.08.23) on charges of attempting to overturn his defeat in the state that contributed to his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden and made history by becoming the first former president to pose for a mugshot.

Trump told the media following his arrest that it was "a very sad day for America" and described the case against him as "a travesty of justice".

The controversial politician said: "We did nothing wrong, I did nothing wrong.

"This is election interference. So I want to thank you for being here. We did nothing wrong. We had every right, every single right, to challenge an election we think was dishonest."

Inside the jail, Trump's vital details were recorded and his fingerprints and mugshot were taken - with the image instantly becoming one of the most famous pictures on the planet.

The former president's daughter-in-law Lara Trump said it was "absurd" that the billionaire had had his fingerprints and mugshot taken.

She told Fox News: "He's not a flight risk, he's one of the most recognisable men in the world.

"We've seen what infiltrating the legal system within politics can do. It is no longer a republic: it becomes an authoritarian state."
