You Can Be Younger is a new, different and very effective way to slow down ageing. I have been a leading therapist for over 25 years and learnt so much about the role the mind plays in how we age. This book is the culmination of everything that really does slow down ageing it’s not enough to simply look younger its essential to feel younger so you can grow older without growing retaining energy, zest and vigour at every stage of life. People who age well leave clues and I have spent almost 20 years studying those clues so anyone can put them into practice and reap the benefits. Women who are very girly like Lulu, Felicity Kendall and Goldie Hawn age differently because giggling, laughing and doing younger things keeps you younger. Girly thoughts and actions make you become and stay more girly.

When we do young things laughing, dancing, having sex we send a message to our bodies that we are young and this slows down how we age. The younger you feel and act the more you lower your biological age. Our bodies age on their own timetable a runner aged 40 may have the heart and lungs of a 25 year old but the knees of a 55 year old. The least important age is your birth certificate age and its the one you need to pay the least attention to, how old you feel and how old you act are far more important if you want to grow older without growing old.

In 2010 Harvard psychologist Dr Ellen Langer took a group of celebrities to a retreat for a BBC programme. The retreat was furnished from 1980, all the magazines, radio shows and TV programmes were from the 80s.and each person wore a badge of themselves from 1980  Before leaving the group underwent tests to determine their age including grip, vision, hearing balance, hormones, muscle strength etc. The group all spent a week living as if it was 30 years earlier. Everything going on around them was engineered to enable them to act as they had 30 yrs ago, subconsciously tricking themselves to believe they were younger. After 7 days, they took the same tests again…. and all had reversed their age by a minimum of 7-10 years and had a new lease of life. When asked to describe what had happened they reported forgetting they were older and as a result they physically grew younger.

These experiments prove that your beliefs determine how you age. If you think and act old, you grow old prematurely, whereas when you think and act younger, you remain younger physically and mentally.  Thats why people like Cliff Richards and Keith Richards have aged in a rather unique way, because they are singers, dancing on stage and doing something youthful for a living they are seen as eternally young. Cliff Richards is called Peter Pan and Keith who should have aged terribly because of his abusive lifestyle proves that doing young things and thinking young thoughts is powerful enough to overcome the ageing effect of bad habits.

The most important tool to slow down ageing is your mind and the good news is that this is free. You don’t need to buy a new wardrobe or invest in expensive beauty treatments. Instead you can take control of how you age. There are no gimmicks- just solutions that will change the way you think and age. My method has an incredibly high success rate and it's radically different. If you want to look and feel younger my techniques work and they have lasting results.  You don't have to spend a fortune to be younger just read the book play the CD absorb powerful solutions and feel the benefits of the latest cutting edge treatments and this time next year you can be physically younger than you are today.

You have spent 25 years in the field, so please tell us about this journey and where it began.

I trained to be a child psychologist when I was 22, but I found that to be very difficult with three patients: mum, dad, child. So I gave that up to work in LA with Jane Fonda, which was much more fun. While I was working for Jane as an exercise instructor I realised how many women in her studio were bulimic, anorexic, or had body dysmorphic disorder.  With my psychology background I wanted to help them and I knew I could, so I trained in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy at UCLA. That was the start of a thriving career helping people with every kind of problem. Because I was working in LA and because of my connection to Jane many of my clients were television stars which lead to me being I asked to work as a therapist/hypnotherapist behind the scenes on several TV shows. I then worked in front of the camera as a panellist and expert on many other shows in the UK and USA often commuting back and forth. I then wrote a best-selling book on weight loss, followed by three other self-help books, which have all done really well meaning I could reach and help more people change their lives. I was offered my own column in a magazine and became an expert for three other publications. Now, my latest passion is speaking, I love speaking to Women's groups in particular about how to be successful, how to have emotional well-being, and inner peace and how to feel empowered. I'm also doing a lot of seminars around my new book "You Can Be Younger" showing people how to slow down ageing which is incredibly rewarding.

You appear a lot on TV and radio, so what has been your most memorable moment?

Working on Celebrity Fit Club UK and USA at the same time, it was such fun commuting backwards and forwards and a whole new experience to appear on American television, which was so very different to working on UK TV. They sent limos to collect me, they gave me a dressing room and my own phone pre-loaded with the numbers of all the stars I was to be working with, it felt rather surreal and was an amazing experience. I also was invented onto radio Cambridge, my brother is a football commentator there, and when I finished my interview they said "That was the famous Marisa Peer, sister to our commentator Tevor Peer." That was so lovely for my Dad who was so proud that both of his children were mentioned at the same time on the radio. When supersize super-skinny said on air that my method was the only one that worked that was very memorable.

Please tell us  a bit about your ten step programme.

My ten steps involve:

 Changing your thoughts

Changing your language

Changing your beliefs

Changing your biological age

Practicing Neurobiocs to slow down mental ageing.

     Changing the way you sleep.

     Change your goals

     Reading From a different script

     Extend your cell by date

     Change your habits.

     Change your life style.

It’s a little pick and mix in that you don't have to do all of it I show you everything that will slow down how you age and invite you to do 80% of it 80% of the time which can add 16 years full and vibrant years to you lifespan. Everything I invite you to do is easy painless and simple I am a big fan of simple small easy adjustments that have a massive lifelong impact.

Why do people often give into ageing rather than trying to arrest it?

Because they believe they can’t do anything about it, that it’s inevitable or the preserve of the rich yet Nelson Mandela spent 30 years in jail with no access to supplements  or an organic diet but his passion kept him young and vibrant almost to the end despite his hardships
Why is the skin so telling of age?

Because it gets so much exposure to the sun, the skin on your inner arm is a true indicator of your skin age as it is protected from the sun. People who are in the sun more or who work outdoors have more lined skin than those who live in cold climates and don't sunbathe.
Why is age as much about the mind as it is about the body?

No matter how young your face or body is that’s of little value if you don’t have a young mind-set too. Youth really means energy and vitality and a zest for life so if you look young and feel old that is of less benefit than if you feel young and vibrant because when you feel young your enjoyment of life will affect how you look. We often fear ageing as we see it as an inevitable  decline into Dementia, Altzheimers, being fragile and slow, losing our mobility and looks but that does not have to be the case Japanese people who rever their elders and who remain active thought life age differently to those in the west.  There are more 100yr old s and 105yr olds than ever before AND THEY HAVE A LOT IN COMMON PREDOMINANTLY A POSITIVE MINDSET, a zest and passion for life, they exercise and they refuse to conform to what we think ageing is they defy it and redefine it .
very
What is next for you?

My new passion is being a speaker as I get to meet and help more people. I speak about empowering women for women's groups. I also plan to speak on some of the saga cruises as I love showing people that we can choose how to age and I am choosing to be here for a long time and to be mentally and physically fit and active for as long as possible.
