The 46-year-old actor suffered an "awful cold" days before gracing the stage to perform in the new West End play, and had no other option but to visit an emergency doctor ahead of the show because he had "great big hole" on his ear drum and an infection inside.

Speaking about his illness to the BBC on Wednesday (05.04.17), the 'Billions' star said: "There was this awful cold that was passed around the company in the last four or five weeks and I held out until about four days ago.

"I had this awful streaming cold. The catarrh all transferred into my ear.

"I went to an emergency doctor at about three o'clock and he had a look in there and said 'you've got a great big hole in your ear drum and you've got an infection of the middle ear.'"

But the head cold left Damian fearing he would faint mid-way through the show, and he had to steady himself by gripping on to a chair to stop him keeling over.

He explained: "There was one point in act three where I had to hold on to a chair because I was going to pass out."
