The 31-year-old actor has a number of intimate moments with co-star Phoebe Dynevor in the Netflix period drama and he admitted having an intimacy coordinator on hand to talk them through the filming made things much easier.

He said: "There was a fair bit! We had an intimacy coordinator, so everything is choreographed. It takes the risk and the embarrassment out of the scene.”

Although some of the star's family tried to dodge his sex scenes, they took so much screen time, it proved impossible.

Asked if his family watched them, he told talk show host Graham Norton: “There were some cousins missing from the family WhatsApp group and they said, ‘We made our tactical cups of tea when you started and when we came back you were still going!’”

Following the popularity of 'Bridgerton', Regé-Jean has been tipped to be the next James Bond but he refused to be drawn on any speculation.

He quipped: "'Bridgerton' is the only ‘B” word I am allowed to say – I am not going to talk about the other ‘B’ words!”

The actor had worked with showrunner Shonda Rhimes for a long time before landing his role of the Duke of Hastings in 'Bridgerton' - but the writer had no idea he was English.

He said: “I had been working with her for three years in 'For the People' and when she was casting for 'Bridgerton', she said, ‘I want what he’s doing but with a British accent.’ She had no idea I wasn’t American.

" She was the first person in about six years to allow me to act in my own accent, which was lovely. Not quite in my own accent as I’m a little more common!”

The actor joked the attention he's received from doing the show has made him "scared" of who might approach him while the UK is in lockdown.

He said: “It’s just me and the four walls and I don’t go to the front door because I am scared. You don’t know who’s going to be there. It’s the only thing that is real about the whole thing!”
