Zero

Zero

I had seen the Warp demo being played previously, and was eager to get my hands on it as soon as I could. Unfortunately the game is still in early stages of development, so it could be a while before we get to see it in full, but its set to be a great entertaining experience.

One of the more complicated puzzle rooms

The action takes place from a top down perspective; you play an alien that is attempting to escape from an underwater laboratory. Using teleportation, you have to traverse through the maze of science labs, all the while trying to escape past guards and solve puzzles. You can teleport into the bodies of the guards and make them explode, or warp out at the last second to allow the other guards to notice something suspicious and make them shoot at each other. Alternatively you can sneak past the guards using barrels and stealth techniques; it seems like this could offer lastability and pull you back into playing the various levels again. One shot from a guard and Zero goes down, making it look like the stealth approach is probably a safe bet.

Firstly it looks brilliant; the cute looking character that the developers are calling zero, because of the zero on his stomach, is a great character design that you really warm to the moment you pick up the controller. The game is colourful, the character designs of the enemy soldiers are clean and smooth; watching them burst into various body parts, and splattering blood on the floor and walls is an unnerving but entertaining experience. It’s all done with a bit of cartoon panache, Zero remaining perfectly innocent, as it’s you who has killed the enemy not him.

An old test subject alien lies dead on the table

At the end of the demo, a large amount of soldiers appear, and then the game fades out to black. Could this be an indication of how the games’ difficulty increases? More enemies to get past rather than harder puzzle makes for an interesting choice. The developer also mentioned that the blue shield some of the guards were holding would make it impossible for you to teleport into them; this will most definitely have a big impact on the play mechanics. When asked how long the game would be, no straight answer was given, other than the mention that they were putting more effort into a constant entertaining experience, rather than a long-lasting one.

Use your little yellow noggin to get around these guys

When chatting with a representative from the developers ‘Trapdoor’, they couldn’t set a release date on it, and they were being quite closed lipped about the game itself. This could be because they are hiding a huge twist to come, or it could be that the game is still too early to discuss; either way this looks to be a huge achievement for Trapdoor and a very unique concept.
