Women prefer wit over wallet size – only 4% want a man with a well paid job
65% of women are turned off by stained teeth
75% of men would laugh at someone bumping into a lamppost
A fifth of men would choose a great body over a gorgeous smile

The age old question of what women want has now been answered – at least when it comes to what they want from the opposite sex. When asked in a survey by Philips Sonicare what they valued most in a potential partner, wit outweighed wealth as 84% of women stated a good sense of humour was the most sought after quality. Only 4% felt that having a well paid job was most important, showing that women would rather their potential beau make them laugh, than pick up the bill.

The research, commissioned to mark National Smile Month, found that a further 8% of women pay close attention to a potential partner’s pearly whites and look for a gorgeous smile when considering a relationship. And whilst men also give top ratings to a partner who has a good sense of humour (67%), nearly a fifth (19%) consider a nice body to be the most important quality in a partner. Whoever said men are only after a woman’s body may well have been on to something!

A toothy grin
It seems that teeth make the smile; 78% say a person’s teeth are the key to a great smile. Forty three percent place white sparkling teeth as the most important factor, whilst 35% say straight teeth are essential for a great smile. And for 65% stained teeth are the most likely thing to put them off someone’s smile!

Size does matter…
When it comes to lips, pumped up pouts are out in favour of petite and perfectly formed mouths; when asked what makes a great smile, 14% of men say a petite, perfectly formed mouth makes a great smile whilst only 5% preferred full pouty lips.

Honesty: the best policy?
When asked if they would let a colleague know if they had something in their teeth, women were most likely to deliver the embarrassing news, with 66% saying they would fess up, compared to only 54% of men.

Laughing at others’ misfortune
Ever laughed at someone you shouldn’t have?... An unashamed 74% of male participants admitted they would crack a smile if they saw someone trip or bump into a lamppost. Women, on the other hand, were slightly more considerate, only 65% would smile upon witnessing another’s misfortune.

Most sought after celebrity smile
The celebrity whose smile women would most like to have is none other than the original pretty woman, Julia Roberts. Her genuine, heartfelt smile shows off a perfect set of shiny white teeth so its no wonder that 22% voted her top above the likes of Aussie darling Kylie Minogue (21%), and the most notorious pout of all - Angelina Jolie (19%)
Amy Winehouse, on the other hand, claimed only 1% of the votes coming in last place below the orthodontic charms of TV’s Ugly Betty and LA’s newest resident - Victoria Beckham!
Meanwhile, the most desired celebrity smiles amongst the men were TV turned big screen actor, George Clooney (34%), a real charmer whose smile makes ladies weak at the knees, followed by Hollywood favourite, Tom Cruise (28%).
Meanwhile, Pete Doherty and David Guest found something in common – they came in joint last place, each receiving only 1% of the votes.

Dr David Winkler, dentist at the Windsor Centre for Advanced Dentistry, comments: ‘What makes us smile can say a lot about the type of person we are, as can the way we smile and how well we look after our smile. Naturally, if you’ve got sparkling white teeth, you’ll smile with confidence, so it’s important to practice thorough brushing habits on a regular basis. Using a sonic toothbrush such as the Philips Sonicare Elite e9500 has been proven to remove significantly more plaque than a manual toothbrush so your teeth not only look great but stay healthy too. After all, a smile given in any situation is sure to brighten up someone’s day ’
