Make up really is very bad for your health it has been claimed.

In a our bid to look great on a daily basis we are absorbing almost 5lb of chemicals, from our cosmetics, into our bodies each year.

Some of the side effects of bombarding our skin with beauty products ranges from skin irritation to premature ageing and even cancer.

The chemical para-hydroxybenzoic acids (parabens), which are found in soaps and shampoos, is just one of the chemicals that is causing concern.

Parabens have been found in breast tumour samples although their link to cancer is not conclusive.

Richard Bence, a biochemist who has been researching convential products said: "We really need to start questioning the products we are putting on our skin and not just assume that the chemicals in them are safe.

"We have no idea what these chemicals do when they are mixed together, the effect could be much greater than the sum of the individual parts.

"If lipstick gets in your mouth it is broken down by the enzymes in saliva and in the stomach. But chemicals get straight into your bloodstream, there's no protection."

And after the report of the dangers of using out of date make up at the beginning of June women in paarticular must really begin to wonder if it's worth it.
