Craftiest People In The UK Are Emotionally Better Off

The average Brit has, at one point in their life, turned their hand to a craft project with painting (40 per cent) and card making (34 per cent) proving to be the top two activities that appeal to their crafty nature.

However, only a third (33 per cent) of Britons describe themselves as regular crafters despite 86 per cent saying that taking up a craft hobby would help bolster their mental wellbeing and sense of satisfaction.

New research released today by QVC reveals that Brits who enjoy creative hobbies benefit from a greater sense of calm.

Engaging hobbies such as craft leave people refreshed and take their mind away from the pressures of everyday life. 79 per cent of Brits say crafting pastimes distract them from everyday worries about money, work and relationships. A further 89 per cent said that they felt a sense of self satisfaction in creating something unique themselves.

Wales is officially home to the craftiest people in the UK, with 77 per cent of people there taking up a creative hobby. Meanwhile those in Northern Ireland were the least likely to partake in regular craft activities with only 56 per cent having ever tried a craft activity.

The report reveals 76 percent of Londoners feel their craft hobbies help them cope with everyday life in a more resourceful way while 72 per cent of those in Yorkshire and Humber believe it makes them more thoughtful.

The male / female divide came surprisingly close with 79 per cent of women stating they are regular crafters and 63 per cent of men saying the same. Card making is the most popular hobby with female Brits, men on the other hand would prefer to paint (49 per cent) or model make (43 per cent).

The favourite craft of those aged 25 and under is card making (46 per cent) with over 45s preferring the relaxation of stitching. Winter is the time of year that most Brits are likely to take part in a craft activity (52 per cent).

Mary-Ann Pickering, QVC’s Craft Buyer comments: "We’ve seen a big increase in craft customers over the last decade as more and more people realize how pleasurable it can be. Crafting is not only calming but it also gives you the pleasure and satisfaction of making something from scratch.

"You don’t need to be ambidextrous or a professional seamstress to enjoy it either, there are a multitude of kits available that cater for all levels and interests.

"Our experts regularly demonstrate techniques on air and most products also feature how-to guides on our website.  As Christmas approaches why not give card making a go?

"See how calm you feel and how thrilled your friends and family are when they receive something you’ve made yourself."
