Sleep

March is National Bed Month, a month long celebration dedicated to the importance of a good night’s rest, something not everyone is getting enough of.

On average, we spend 106 days every year in bed, but the fact that nearly a third of our year is spent under the sheets does not necessarily mean that we getting adequate rest. Studies show that at least one third of the population is affected by sleep problems at some point in their lives.

Poor quality sleep is known to lead to problems with learning, memory, concentration and low mood, which can contribute to unfulfilled potential at work as well as strained relationships at home.

But help is now at hand in the form of a convenient guide from Tempur who have teamed up with respected sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski, Director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, to create the Good Sleep Guide to help you get the perfect night’s sleep.

The Good Sleep Guide is full of simple tips and tricks to help you get the best rest, from ways to develop the right bedroom routine - including which foods trigger sleep and which you should avoid - to creating the ideal sleeping environment.

If you feel that you are not getting the sleep you need, the following tips for a better night’s sleep may help.

Make your bedroom a place for sleeping. Try to use blackout blinds or dark curtains and reduce noisy distractions such as telephones and pets.

Don’t snack before bed. Some believe that having a bedtime snack can help as the amino acids found in certain foods such as turkey and peanuts trigger the release of serotonin in the brain which helps you relax - but there is virtually no evidence for this.

Relax before going to bed. Using scented oils in your baths, listening to soft music or having a warm drink can all help you unwind. Relaxation exercises and techniques such as Yoga can also aid restful sleep.

Don’t lie in bed when you can’t sleep. Get up and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy again, then return to bed.

Make sure your mattress is comfortable. The right mattress can improve quality of sleep, yet unbelievably statistics suggest the majority of people change their marriage more often than their mattress.

Follows these tips and ensure a great night's sleep from now on.
