Women should be made aware of the dangers of surgery

After a woman suffered multiple problems with her silicone breast implants she has urged the Scottish Parliament to raise awareness of the dangers.

Mairi Johnston wants Parliament to highlight the real hazards that can occur when going under the knife.

After the silicone implants Ms Johnston became seriously ill and had to have 14 hospital operations.

The new cohesive silicone gel-filled implants are said to be harmful and have a lot of draw backs. If there happens to be a rupture of the implant inside the body there is more likely to be side effects, compared with the sterile salt-water solution that fills the saline implants.

If this happens there could be possible migration of the substance to other parts of the body. Symptoms include, muscle spasm and pain, swollen joints and rashes. There is also likely to be a changed eye and saliva fluid and hair loss.

The most common risk after having the procedure is capsular contracture and occurs in one in 10 women. Scar tissue naturally forms around the implant and begins to shrink, this causes the implant to harden and sometimes deform.
