Planning improvements in our lifestyles is something we aim to achieve year in year out, as we all have things we’d like to change or improve. For some it could be adopting a healthier eating regime or cutting down on alcohol, for others finally giving up smoking or simply improving our mindfulness as the world becomes ever more frantic.

Many of us make resolutions at the start of the year, but sadly many of us also fall at the first hurdle, finding ourselves by February and March falling back into old negative habits.

So how can we avoid the pitfalls and finally break the cycle of repeated behaviour that gives New Year’s resolutions a bad name and how do we stick to our goals for the whole year?

Ensuring success is something that award winning mind coach and hypnotherapist, Aaron Surtees’ knows all about.

Mr Aaron Surtees, Head of award winning Clinic City Hypnosis and Founder of Subconsciously app, exclusively reveals his 6 practical tips to help you stay focused on achieving your goals:

1. Be realistic and choose one thing to focus on

It’s tempting to with a long list of self-improvements, but beware of setting yourself up to fail. When establishing your goals, always be realistic, even if it means choosing just one thing and focusing exclusively on it.

2. Have support around you

Having the right support around you can double your chances of success. Whether it’s a partner, close friend or work colleague, having someone with similar targets to check in with regularly for motivation and support will help attain your goals. In return, providing support to them will strengthen your own resolve.

3. Monitor your progress

By keeping a written track of your progress you will be able to see what you have achieved. Whether you use an app or just a notebook, it will work wonders for motivating you, keeping you on track and avoiding failure.

4. Plan ahead

Make sure you have all of the tools and support you need to help you on your journey before you start. Planning how to ensure you have the time needed to dedicate to your commitment will pay dividends later.

5. Adopt the right mentality

Always celebrate your wins, no matter how trivial, and don’t allow yourself to dwell on the negative. Remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint, so go easy on yourself and enjoy the process.

6. Don’t forget to relax

Don’t beat yourself up if you have a couple of set backs. Try not to let any anxieties about sticking to your resolutions through the year get you down if you have a slight set back. Try relaxing and being in the moment to slow down your breathing and reduce any stresses or worries. You could try self hypnosis and meditation which is highly effective. You will feel so much more motivated and focused with a daily medication of even 5 minutes.

If you follow these tips you will be on your way to achieving your goals for the new year!
