Brits don't feel the need to wrap up despite the cold weather

Hypothermia, the condition that occurs when the body’s core temperature cools to dangerously low levels, is the last thing on your mind in July but it can and does kill all year round.

There were 132 deaths from hypothermia in the summers of 2008 to 2010, and those were warm and dry compared to the last two summers.

Now, a new survey for online retailer universal-textiles.com reveals the majority of Britons are hopelessly ill prepared for the risks of being caught out in bad weather during the summer months.

More than half think it’s unlikely anyone could die from hypothermia in the summer and just 13% pack thermal clothing when holidaying in the UK.

Even though long range forecasts are changeable, 48% take no cold weather clothing with them if the forecast is good.

Ravi Karia, managing director of thermal clothing specialist Universal Textiles, said: “It is shocking how many deaths there are from hypothermia in the summer, and yet most people are completely unaware of the risk.

“When holidaying in the UK, you should take a variety of clothing for all the family. The weather can change very quickly. It is important to wear layers that you can easily add or take off, and I recommend thermal clothing for late night walks, boat trips and camping.”

Even though the elderly are most at risk from hypothermia, only one in 100 people over 55 associate the condition with summer.

Contrary to belief, the temperature does not have to be below freezing for hypothermia to occur. Because people are less likely to be prepared for cold conditions during warmer months, summertime exposure to the cold can turn into a deadly situation.

Hypothermia in the summer can occur when the temperature drops in the evening and people are not prepared, for example while on open water. Another risk factor is being outdoors for an extended period so hikers and campers should take particular care.

With many British families choosing to holiday in the UK this year, it is important to be aware of the dangers of the weather changing.
