The Sword In The Stone

The Sword In The Stone

When we come to talk about great Disney movies The Sword in the Stone is one that often gets overlooked - despite it's great characters and funny storyline.

So our series of looking at some of the best movies from this animation giant will remember The Sword and the Stone is all it's glory.

The movie was directed by Wolfgang Reitherman and was the 18th animated movie from Disney back in 1963.

The movie follows Merlin the Magician who finds himself teaching a young boy who is destined to be King Arthur.

The Sword in the Stone is a delightful addition to the Disney family as the story of Arthur is brought to the life with huge gusto.

It is perhaps the Disney movie that is most for children, although there is some humour in there for the adults, as it's light hearted and silly from the off.

But there is a real charm to the film, the storyline and the central relationship between Wart and Merlin.

Wart is downtrodden by his foster family but Merlin believes that this young boy could be something more - a great lesson for us all.

For me this was my first 'Arthur' story and the one that has really stayed with me as I have got older - and this movie still has the same charm and sweetness that it did when I was young.

Sure perhaps the animation is not as sophisticated as other Disney movies of that period but there is just something about it that hooks you and draws you in.

It may not be the most famous but for those who grew up watching it it's  a Disney fave and one that isn't forgotten!
