Lily Collins has hinted that The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is darker than any of the other teen franchises that we have seen in recent years.

The actress is set to take on the central role of Clary Fray as the first book in the series by Cassandra Clare is adapted for the big screen.

Collins was at Comic Con over the weekend and has given a little hint as to what we can expect from the upcoming film.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter the actress said: "There's humour in it, which I think makes it different than any other franchise. It has a comedic undertone.

"But the world is darker than some of the teenage franchises that we've seen. It's very goth and underground. So, probably not for the youngest viewers.

"I think it will appeal to them because the boys having their action sequences, but I definitely think it will appeal to the older groups because it's sexier."

Clary Fray is set to be the biggest role of Collins' career so far, as she teams up with Lena Headey, Jamie Campbell Bower and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The actress has also completed work on Love, Rosie; which is an adaptation of the Cecelia Ahern novel.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is released 21st August.
