12 Years A Slave

12 Years A Slave

No year is complete without a good biopic film, and there are a whole host of them to kick back and enjoy over the next twelve months.

In fact, if you are a big fan of this genre then you are in for a treat as there are a whole host of them coming out way over the next few weeks.

We take a look at the biopic movies that should not be missed in 2014.

- 12 Years A Slave - released 10th January.

12 Years A Slave is already one of the most talked about and praised movies of the year - it hasn't even hit the big screen yet.

The movie is based on the memoir of Solomon Northup and tells the story of a free man living in New York who is tricked and sold into slavery.

12 Years A Slave is already one of the best movies of 2014 as Steve McQueen returns to the director's chair to deliver a tour de force of a film; this really is one of the most powerful films I have witnessed in quite some time.

This is a dark, brutal, and emotional movie as well as uplifting; it is a film about the unbreakable human spirit as it is about slavery.

12 Years A Slave is set to be a major awards force over the next few weeks and could well win the Best Picture Oscar.

- The Railway Man - released 10th January.

Another powerful film hitting the big screen this week comes in the form of The Railway Man.

The Railway Man is based on the memoir by Eric Lomax and follows a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II. Years later Lomax sets out to face his tormentor.

Colin Firth and Jeremy Irvine both play Lomax in the movie and both give terrific performances as haunted and suffering men.

A fantastic support cast has been assembled as Nicole Kidman, Stellan Skarsgård and Hiroyuki Sanada will also star. Jonathan Teplitzky is in the director's chair.

This is a movie that looks at the horror and brutality of war, but it is also a film about forgiveness as well as honour.

Much like 12 Years A Slave, The Railway Man is a movie that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

- The Wolf of Wall Street - released 17th January.

The Wolf of Wall Street sees Leonardo DiCaprio reunite with director Marin Scorsese for their fifth film together - their first since Shutter Island.

The movie is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort. The film charts the rise of the New York stockbroker through to his demise.

DiCaprio will play Belfort in the film, and is joined by a fab cast that includes Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey and Margot Robbie.

To say that this movie is a tad long is a bit of an understatement; however, it is a movie that just has this energy that is bursting out of every scene.

This is mainly thanks to a fantastic central turn from DiCaprio and expert direction from Scorsese - it may be bursting with energy, but it never loses control.

DiCaprio has already picked up a Best Actor - Musical/Comedy Golden Globe nomination, and we will have to wait and see if he is in the Oscar race.

- Lone Survivor - released 31st January.

Lone Survivor is one of the movies that I am personally really looking forward to as Mark Wahlberg returns to the big screen.

Lone Survivor is based on the book by Marcus Luttrell and recounts the failed June 28, 2005 mission "Operation Red Wings.”

Four members of SEAL Team 10 were tasked with the mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shahd.

Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, Taylor Kitsch, and Eric Bana join Wahlberg on the cast list, while Peter Berg returns to the director's chair.

It is great to see Berg back and tackling something that has more bite to it than a mindless blockbuster.

This movie promises to be action packed as well as a very visceral movie experience.

- Dallas Buyers Club - released 7th February.

Matthew McConaughey really has become a major action heavyweight in the last few years with some varied and interesting roles.

However, McConaughey has delivered the performance of his career in Dallas Buyers Club - a performance that has seen him already pick up some much deserved silverware.

Dallas Buyers Club is based on the story of Ron Woodroof as he goes outside of the medical system that is failing him and other HIV/Aids sufferers and starts to give the right medication to the people who need it.

McConaughey takes on the role of HIV sufferer Woodroof and lost a massive fifty pounds for the part.

Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner join him on the cast list, while Jean-Marc Vallée is in the director's chair.

McConaughey could well walk away with the Best Actor - Drama Golden Globe at the weekend, and should be in the Oscar race. Could he be an Oscar winner?

- Grace of Monaco - released 14th March

Grace of Monaco sees Nicole Kidman return to the big screen as she takes on the role of Grace Kelly in the new biopic.

Sadly, the movie has been pushed back and so is out of the Oscar race, but that doesn't stop it from being a very intriguing film.

The film follows the story of former Hollywood star Grace Kelly's crisis of marriage and identity, during a political dispute between Monaco's Prince Rainier III and France's Charles De Gaulle, and a looming French invasion of Monaco in the early 1960s.

Olivier Dahan is in the director's chair, and he is no stranger to the biopic genre having been behind the terrific La Vie en Rose.

Tim Roth, Derek Jacobi, Frank Langella, Milo Ventimiglia and Parker Posey join Kidman on the cast list.

- Tracks - 25th April

Mia Wasikowska is one of the best young actresses around and has done a wide variety of work over the last couple of years.

She is back in the spring with powerful new drama Tracks: which tells the true story of Robyn Davidson.

Wasikowska will take on the role of Davidson - a woman who went on a nine-month journey across the Australian desert.

Tracks is a movie that has already lit up the festival circuit, as there is something that is incredibly pure about this movie.

John Curran is in the director's chair for the first time since Stone, and has brought together a cast that also includes Adam Driver, Emma Booth, and Jessica Tovey.

- All Is By My Side - 8th August

No year is complete without a big music biopic, and All Is By My Side is the one to watch out for this year.

The movie tells the story of Jimi Hendrix's pre-fame years and sees André Benjamin take on the role of the iconic musician.

John Ridley is in the director's chair as well as on script writing duty: this is his first feature film since Cold Around the Heart back in 1997.

Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell, Burn Gorman, and Ruth Negga join Benjamin on the cast list.

Foxcatcher and Nina are other movies that are on the horizon, while a Lance Armstrong biopic is currently being filmed. Biopic about Freddie Mercury and Elton John are also in the pipeline.
