Rating: 4/5

A year after the release of widely praised Apple Cherub Drive Abagail Grey aka Claire Campbell is back with her new EP Dark Wood.

And this collection of four tracks is an incredibly personal project for the singer song-writer as it is in memory of her aunt who died in 2010.

Dark Wood is the opening track on the EP and it is a haunting track that you won’t forget in a hurry - it really is a very beautiful song.

Dark Wood is a song that really touches the heart as Grey sings about the devastation of loss and what it is like being left behind - it really is a song that everyone will be able to relate to.

Throughout the chorus Grey’ beautiful vocal is supported just by a piano before strings kick in in the chorus - the bareness of the track really does allows Grey’s voice to pack a punch.

This is a track where Grey really opens up about the loss in her life and it is an emotional and emotive song and a real standout on this EP.

Water couldn’t be more different as there is a real brightness to the track from start to finish. The piano on this track really gives this song fluidity and a movement that works really well.

Shoes is the third track on the EP as Grey recalls a story her aunt told her about wearing her first pair of high heels as a child.

The piano gives a real clip clop sound to the song - which works given the subject matter of the song.

Shoes is a rather stripped back and simple track but there is a real feeling of reminiscing and looking back as Grey once again wears her heart on her sleeve.

Flame rounds off the four track EP and this is perhaps the most radio friendly song in this collection -however there is still a sombre feel to the song.

Dark Wood is a beautiful collection of songs from Abagail Grey as the sing-songwriter bears her heart and soul and sings of her loss and pain which is rather refreshing.
