Alton Towers Resort has this week announced that it's been trialling a new granny-hire service called 'Insta-Gran', as part of their brand new Enchanted Village accommodation offering.

As part of this series, grandmothers will be available for hire at the resort for a variety of different activities including 15-minute story time appointments, knitting, poetic wake-up calls, preparing chocolate drinks and full evening babysitting.

Recruited locally, the on-site grans have been put through extensive training which includes classes for bedtime reading and crafting the perfect bedroom hot chocolate.

In addition, each Granny will leave a Werther's Originals sweet on the bedtime table for children to enjoy the following morning, alongside a copy of the new Alton Tower's Resort book 'The Enchanted Village', commissioned especially for the new accommodation in partnership with HarperCollins and written by acclaimed children's author Jeanne Willis.

Katherine Duckworth of Alton Towers Resort commented: "Launching 'Insta-Gran' is something Alton Towers Resort is very proud of. Following research into UK reading habits, we wanted to create a unique world-exclusive service to give parents a night off and send children off to sleep with our fantastical new tale, The Enchanted Village; delivered the way only 'grannies' know how."

On-site gran Heather Scroggs added: "I've had decades worth of experience looking after little ones and so this job is certainly a pleasure. The best bit is tucking them into bed and sending them off to magical and imaginative dream worlds."

This new service has been launched in response to new research and statistics which revealed a fifth of children thought that their grandparents were "more fun" at story time.

The top five Insta-Gran classic tales include:

  • Goldilocks & The Three Bears
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • Three Little Pigs
  • The Hungry Caterpillar
  • The Boy Who Cried Wolf
