Prince William

Britain's Duke of Cambridge had a car on standby as he played in a charity polo match yesterday (14.07.13)

Prince William brought out his competitive side as he got stuck into the Jerudong Trophy Match in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, while his heavily pregnant wife Duchess Catherine was awaiting the arrival of their newborn, 100 miles away.

The second in line to the throne may have been enjoying himself, but he made sure he had staff available to whisk him back to St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, Central London, where the Duchess will be escorted when she goes into labour.

The Prince - who was playing for Cirencester Purple - was often heard shouting, 'Oh come on!' as he played alongside his brother Prince Harry during the hour-and- a-half long match.

The annual game - which involves royalty from across the world take part in a bid to raise money for charities - saw Cirencester Purple lose to the Cirencester Black, but the siblings didn't let that get them down as they took part in a meet and greet after the game.

A Palace source said Prince William was initially undecided about playing in the game.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, He said: "Initially his office said yes, then said no, and then confirmed that he would be playing.

"I think he was torn as, clearly, he wants to be with his wife at such an important time.

"But he was all too aware how much the event raises for charities he is passionate about."
