One royal fan has camped out for 12 days awaiting the birth of the royal baby.

Former soldier Terry Hutt has been dressed head-to-toe in Union Jack clothing and sleeping on a bench opposite the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, where Duchess Catherine was admitted in the early stages of labour this morning.

The 78-year-old from Cambridge, East England, said: "I have the best royal bed in town.

"I have lost my voice with all the excitement. At night we're watching the hospital in two-hour stints, like the Army.

"The health of the baby, and Catherine, is the only important element."

Terry - who carries a placard congratulating Prince William and the Duchess, formerly known as Kate Middleton - has been a lifelong royal fan, meeting his first member of the British ruling family aged four, when the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited areas of London which had been bombed in World War II.

He has since met the Queen a number of times when he has turned up at public events.

He said: "She knows me as the Union Jack man as I'm always dressed up in red, white and blue. They're my colours and she'll always talk to me; we've talked about her mum before."

The Duchess of Cambridge is now expected to give birth either today or tomorrow, with crowds lining up outside both the hospital and Buckingham Palace eager for news of the new heir to the throne.
