On AAU, Maria acts strangely around patient Alex Deacon. Sam is back being his usual flirty self and does not notice her strange behaviour. He asks her out for a drink later that evening and she agrees, although clearly pre-occupied by seeing this woman.

Joseph still can’t get through to Faye and after leaving endless messages decides to call the police. Just as he does Faye arrives at work and he is angry but relieved to see her. She still has not done a pregnancy test and they decide that there is no time like the present. Joseph gets out the engagement ring, and gives it to her saying nothing.

Ric apologises to Kyla again about not telling her about Abra’s arrival. Although still annoyed, Kyla is being strong and ignoring Abra’s calls. They attend to victims from a school mini bus crash. Unfortunately the driver, Matthew Stacey, dies and several schoolgirls are injured. To add to the chaos, a seemingly unhurt schoolgirl – Hannah - collapses in excruciating pain. Her best friend Katie, and the other teenage girls don’t seem that worried about her, but lonely and bullied Maz seems particularly concerned, clutching the bag Hannah dropped.

Faye is not pregnant and both she and Joseph seem relieved. Faye declines Joseph’s marriage proposal, and she gives the ring back to him saying that it was a sweet idea but there is no need to rush things – Joseph wants her to at least think about his offer, which still stands.

Pete McCarthur arrives at Holby after collapsing in a shopping centre. Daisha tries to treat him, but he attacks her and Faye as he disappears through the corridor. Faye is ok, but Daisha has received a cut to her head. As Mark stitches her up, they decide to have a party that evening to celebrate her moving in.

Maria investigates Alex Deacon before taking her blood test. She is upset and hides in one of the offices where Sam finds her. Maddy distracts him with tickets for a concert that night.

Hannah is rushed into surgery for Ric to operate on her. Kyla rushes in as Maz reveals that Hannah is diabetic and hasn’t been taking her insulin. Her kidneys are damaged but with some advice from Abra, Ric manages to get her through the operation.

Pete’s pregnant wife Angie arrives, but Pete is still missing. She explains that he is severely brain damaged after being attacked, which explains his violent outburst. Robert eventually finds Pete and they proceed with further tests. Joseph manages to calm him and treat him – he has stable angina. When Kyla sees Faye’s ring she questions her decision, but Faye realises that she really does love Joseph. She slips a note saying ‘Yes’ into a file she give to him and he follows her out, before passionately kissing her in front of both Mark and Daisha.

Abra gets a call after having his interview, and he is told that he hasn’t got the job. Kyla tries to cheer him up but he is unresponsive. Kyla tells him that she thinks he needs counselling, but he doesn’t agree – he just wants to have a laugh.

Ric figures that Hannah has diabulimia after Maz explains Hannah’s recent dramatic weight loss. Ric talks to her and explains how badly she has damaged her kidneys and that they will do all they can to find a transplant, but it may be too late. Hannah is devastated.

Faye’s happiness soon vanishes when she finds Donald Hewson’s medical file in Joseph’s briefcase. She cannot believe that Joseph still does not trust her, although he insists that he does and just wants to help clear her name. After rowing, Joseph admits that there is still a part of her he feels he does not know and she leaves. Joseph later apologises but she gives him the ring back, saying that they can’t move on until he really does trust her. Joseph is adamant his offer of marriage is still open and that it’s up to her to name the date.

Alex takes a turn for the worse, and Maria unwillingly continues to treat her. On leaving the hospital she is upset and Sam finds her crying outside. He encourages her to tell him what’s wrong and she reveals that she thinks Alex is her birth mother. They sit and talk and Maria explains that she is not angry, but more shocked. She never wanted to contact her birth mother so does not know what to do now. Sam thinks it is fate and that she can’t let this chance go, so they return to her bedside. They are shocked to find Alex in a life or death situation as Ric tries to resuscitate her.

Maz visits Hannah as Ric tells Kyla he thinks it’s time to call her parents, as she hasn’t long left. Kyla talks to Maz who explains that she has no friends and is bullied about her weight and the way that she looks. Hannah had felt like this and is dying because she was scared of being alone. Kyla is distraught when Hannah finally passes away, not being able to hold back the tears. She finds Abra in the bar and he offers her a drink, but she resists, although tempted. Abra didn’t get the job and drunkenly tells Kyla how glad he is she’s there and that he’s not alone. She eventually realises the mistake she would make in going back to Abra and leaves. She has come too far for this and she can’t just give in because she is scared of being alone.
