Lady Byrne and Elliot arrive at Holby together discussing their next dinner date. Donna gossips about them and Joseph overhears her talking to Daisha and insists it is all nonsense. He does however question his mother, who tells him to get on, not wanting to discuss the matter. Joseph also questions Elliott, who says their relationship is purely professional.

After Max is transferred to Kyla’s ward, both foster mum Lindsey and Lola tell Kyla she needs to keep her distance. Kyla agrees, although is not happy about the situation. Social carer Robert thanks Kyla for keeping a low profile, but she warns him she still suspects Lindsey’s drinking and wants something done about her. Kyla finds an opportunity to ask Max if he wants to come home but he tells her to go. He doesn’t want to talk - he likes Lindsey and wants Kyla to lay off her. Kyla is sure he is protecting her, but when Lindsey arrives herself, she has to go.

Jac finds Faye in the locker room and tells her she saw Carl outside. She tries to help Faye, but Faye doesn’t want to know. Instead she goes to find Joseph and tells him what happened. Joseph wants to call the police but Faye is insistent he doesn’t. She asks him for money so that they can pay Carl off and Joseph reluctantly agrees, writing out a cheque for £5,000. Jac later finds Joseph and can’t believe he has agreed to pay Carl off.

Elliot treats Professor Walter Noble who has severe chest pains; maybe due to taking erectile enhancement tablets to succumb to his young fiancée’s needs. Lady Byrne arrives and distracts Elliot. Walter then sees Lady Byrne who turns out to be an old friend. Elliot becomes jealous when he overhears Walter asking her out to dinner, and Lady Byrne agrees.

Kyla confronts Lindsey in the stairwell about the treatment of her foster children. Lindsey is not impressed by Kyla’s questioning - she’s heard Max’s stories of what a bad person Kyla is. Kyla goes to speak to Abra for advice, but he isn’t helpful in any way. He tells her to walk away as that’s what stops the pain. Abra later treats Max for a leg abscess and is rude to him, telling him to stop crying and shouting about everything, as soon everyone will stop listening. He also tells Max to get over the fact his father is dead.

Jac goes to speak to Faye, warning her not to give Carl the money. Jac offers to go with her to meet Carl but Faye doesn’t want Jac’s advice and goes to meet Carl alone. He is aggressive towards her, telling her she is now his and he will control everything she does. Following Jac’s advice Faye changes her mind and decides not to give him the cheque. She tells him this is over and she will not help him any more. Carl is scared and evidently desperate, so flees with just £20 cash from Faye.

Elliot is clearly jealous by Lady Byrne’s dinner date with Walter, but he doesn’t know that she has cancelled it, telling Walter she has other commitments. Walter realises that she is talking about Elliot and tells Elliot how much Lady Byrne cares about him. Elliott then apologises to Lady Byrne, realising he needs to be mature about the situation and ask her out like a gentleman, on a proper date. Lady Byrne agrees and they share a passionate kiss.

Jac goes to speak to Joseph about the Carl situation, but Joseph wants her to just leave him and Faye alone. As she tells him she only watching his back, Carl is rushed into the ward with severe injuries after evidently being beaten up by the loan sharks. Faye panics on seeing him but Jac and Joseph tell her to carry on working as they rush him into theatre. While scrubbing up, Jac is shocked to discover Joseph wrote Carl a cheque. Not knowing Faye never gave him the cheque, they panic, thinking that if anything happens to Carl during surgery, the cheque will link Joseph to him. With Elliot’s assistance they operate on Carl, but he dies during surgery.

In the toilets Lindsey confronts Kyla, abusing her and manipulating her into becoming angry. Kyla realises Lindsey is drunk and doesn’t fall for her games; for her it’s like looking in a mirror. Kyla instead ignores Lindsey’s comments and tells her some home truths, leaving her to think about what her drinking is doing to these children. Kyla then goes to speak to Lola and manages to convince her to get five minutes more time with Max to try and get him to confess to what Lindsey is really like. They don’t get anywhere, but realise that Max is holding the fort for Lindsey and that he feels it is his responsibility to look after the children, like neither his mum nor foster mum ever did.

Joseph is relieved to find out that Faye never gave Donald the cheque. Although thankfull towards Jac for her advice, he also thinks Jac conned Faye into throwing Carl to the wolves. Jac sees Faye get into a taxi and follows Faye on her bike.

Back in Holby, Lindsey has made a complaint to Roger, saying that Kyla has attacked her in the toilets.
