Linden has been suspended after the death of Liam Harris on the operating table but despite Jayne having dismissed him from the premises he is still wandering the corridors of Holby City. He comes across a pregnant Chinese woman who is carrying conjoined twins and who is desperately in need of medical help and even her husband is determined that Linden should help.

Whilst still at Holby, Jayne is questioned about Linden’s actions in theatre and she informs the hospital executives that the situation is under control, saying that she knows how the patient died, with no autopsy required, and that Linden will face the consequences for his ‘careless’ actions.

Faye returns to Holby after her visit to South Africa, lost and confused she wants things to return to normal and has had enough of ‘surprises’. Whilst talking to Donna, Faye informs her that she has got engaged to Luke and thinks that no-one else knows until Donna opens the door to a surprise mini engagement party organised by her and Jac. Faye is lost for words and thanks everyone, while wondering why Joseph has told everyone without informing her. Jac, now back to work after her bike crash congratulates Faye and Joseph but this is Jac’s first encounter with Faye since the accident and she adds sarcastically ‘My heart is broken’.

Jayne discovers Linden still working at Holby and insists that he leaves but the case of the Chinese couple has become more problemlatic. The couple are said to be tourists in the UK and have come west of England to see the sites. Jayne is suspicious of why a Chinese couple would come to the west of England while so heavily pregnant.

Faye confronts Joseph wanting to know why he felt the need to tell everyone about their engagement. Joseph says that he had no idea that people knew and had only told Jac. Faye is unimpressed as obviously telling Jac would result in everyone knowing. Joseph says that he wanted to tell Jac himself as he wanted to make it clear to her that he is in love with Faye. Faye forgives Joseph and explains that she wants a quiet night in with no more surprises. Joseph bites his tongue and agrees, knowing that other surprises are to follow.

Making things disappear is Mr Fennel’s profession; he’s a magician who has come to Holby to have a lung reduction as a smoking related disease has infected both his lungs. Not wanting to give up his love for tobacco Fennel shows people magic tricks to disguise the fact that he is hiding cigarettes under his pillow. Fennel doesn’t seem to understand the dangers of smoking more and he is constantly trying to find ways to have a quick fix of nicotine. The ‘ever-disappearing’ Mr Fennel uses a cleaning storage cupboard as his place to smoke but while coughing loudly he fails to hear the cupboard being locked and he continues smoking until he collapses still holding his precious cigarettes. The smoke triggers the fire alarm and he is found with smoke coming from under the cupboard door. Mr Fennel, lucky to be alive, has to make the decision to stop smoking or die as the disease is one thing that Fennel will not be able to make disappear.

Faye’s day of ‘no more surprises’ continues as Joseph’s sister visits Holby wanting to meet Faye for an engagement party. Faye is overwhelmed with the idea but agrees on hearing that family have arrived from all-over to attend the party.

Linden finds new ways of communicating with the Chinese couple, using sign language and drawings to explain the situation the conjoined twins are currently in. Jayne does not see the couple as a ‘medical emergency’ and informs them that they have to leave the hospital as the NHS will not accommodate them. Linden tries to reason with Jayne by getting an interpreter to explain what is happening to them before throwing them out. Jayne agrees but then realises that the couple are actually from North Korea and have escaped the country as they are practising Christians, which is illegal in their home country.

Jayne is put into a serous situation, let them stay or have them deported with the risk of them being killed for their beliefs – which would result in more negative press for the hospital. Jayne seeks advice from Ric who speaks to Linden about the woman’s condition. Linden explains that the woman is still suffering from sickness which Ric believes is due to an infection, which left untreated could be fatal and informs Jayne that be believe the woman is in fact a medical emergency, leaving Jayne no choice but to grant the couple treatment.

Meanwhile, Maddy grabs Linden’s attention and asks why there isn’t an autopsy planned for the dead Liam Harris, with Maddy explaining that this will have him struck off. Linden, well aware of what he faces, ignores Maddy and she begins to wonder what might have actually happened to Harris. Maddy overhears Michael arguing with Jamie and realises that Jamie was in the theatre with Linden at the time of the death of Liam Harris. She wonders if Jamie was the real reason the patient died.

To fuel her suspicions Maddy asks Michael to join in on an operation on a patient with a large abdominal cyst, which Jamie is also going to be part of. During the operation, Maddy notices Jamie isn’t paying that much attention to the amount of fluids he is giving to the patient. Wanting to clear Linden’s name Maddy secretly enters the morgue and takes a blood sample from the Liam Harris’s body.

Faye, rushes with Joseph to get ready for the engagement party. Joseph knows Faye doesn’t really want to attend and so he tells Faye that he has cancelled it and that he wants to spend the evening with her alone.
